Drywall Cutting

  • Making the long rip cut
  • Cutting circles
  • Angle cuts
  • Cutting the width
  • Trimming drywall panels
  • Utility knife

Measure Twice, Cut Once

Drywall is cut to size by scoring the paper on the front side (usually white) with a utility knife, breaking the sheet along the cut, scoring the paper backing, and finally breaking the sheet in the opposite direction. Small features such as holes for outlets and light switches are usually cut using a keyhole saw.

Use EZRip for making the long rip cut

Use a utility knife with a drywall t-square to cut the width

Use a drywall circle cutter to mark the hole. Then cut the hole with the drywall keyhole saw illustrated below.

The keyhole saw is used for miscellaneous trimming purposes and makes an excellent tool for cutting the electrical outlet openings. It is also used in combination with a circle cutting for cutting circles. The sharp point makes it easy to penetrate the drywall to begin the cut.

Use a drywall rasp for triming drywall panels that may fit too tight

Use a chalk line with a utility knife to make angles cuts

A good utility knife is an essential tool to any drywall job

Most of the time you measure and cut the drywall panel before you install it. However around window and door openings, it is easier to cut the drywall after it has been installed. For example, install the drywall panel over the window opening. Then using the 2 x 4 from the window as a guide, cut the drywall with the saw illustrated.
